A comprehensive non-tech list of popularly used SEO Terminology. Includes the common name, nick-names and definition of very common SEO terms thrown around by Webmasters and SEO gurus. Of course there’s quite a bit more to all of this, but this list should help you understand their basic meaning.

301 Redirect

Definition

A method used to redirect one webpage to another that is search engine friendly. 301’s give the address, link and reason (Moved Permanently) of the redirection. 301’s are used for moved pages, sites, etc…

Algorithm

Definition

The way search engines crawl, index and rank their website repository.

Alt Tags – Alternative Text

Definition

This is a name, phrase or description assigned to an image that best describes it or the contents of the page its’ on.

Backlinks

Definition

Links from other sites pointing to yours. In internet marketing these links are important because it helps search engines determine the amount of activity your website is getting from others. Backlinks are one of many factors that are figured in their assessment of your site. More backlinks can help turn into better rankings in search. Backlink quality is also measures in terms of PR or Page Rank. The higher the rank, the better the backlink quality, the better it is for your website to be linked by them.

Click Fraud

Definition

An unethical way to try and bankrupt a competitor or bulk up your numbers by intentionally clicking on a monitored link or ad without the intention to visit or purchase.

Content Match

Definition

Typically used in paid advertising internet marketing, it’s when your ads show up in a targeted area based on content rather than demographics or some other characteristic. For example if you had an ad for school supplies, you might want to advertise in place where education is discussed or searched for instead of age or location.

Conversion Rate

Definition

This is a calculated rate based on a visitor that performs an action that you want to track like filling out a form or clicking a specific link or ad.

Cost Per Click

Definition

Refers to an amount assigned to a link each time a user (does not necessarily have to be unique) clicks on it. Used in advertising, it’s a way a search engine or other business will charge another to pay for their ad based on the number of times the advertisers site was accessed through it.

CPM

Definition

Cost per Thousand – the amount the advertiser pays for every thousand impressions their ad gets.

CTR – Click Through Rates

Definition

Usually measures in percentages, but its a calculated total of times your ad or link was clicked on over an amount of time to access your site.

Doorway Page or Bridge Page or Jump Page or Gateway Page or Entry page

Definition

Black Hat SEO in nature in internet marketing; this is a technique that search engines will ban, ignore or rank lower. It is when a page is create solely for the purpose of rankings and not for user use. These pages are created for spamming the index of a search engine by inserting results for particular phrases with the purpose of sending visitors to a different page (also known as spamdexing). Doorway pages that redirect visitors without their knowledge use some form of cloaking.

Google AdWords

Definition

Google’s PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising program for.

Hits

Definition

Not to be confused with web page traffic, hits are measurements of how many times an element on your page has been viewed. This includes images, opened pages, scripts, etc…. so one page visit can result in 50 hits depending on the number of elements on a page.

Impressions

Definition

A calculated total based on the number of times a link, typically an ad or title phrase linking to your website comes up on a page a user was looking at. This is not a count of clicks, but a count of how many times the link appears on pages over a general amount of time.

KEI – Keyword Effectiveness Index

Definition

A measurement based on search frequency and competition of the keyword to determine the effectiveness of a keyword for natural ranking.

Keyword or Keyword Phrases

Definition

Words or groupings of words searchers use to find web pages; search engines use to index and give results for; and programmers use to get their website indexed to be found in search by.

Keyword Stuffing

Definition

Black Hat SEO in nature; this is a technique that search engines will ban, ignore or rank lower. It is when a designer will try and fit an excessive amount of keywords or repeated keywords in everything from the META tags to scripts in order to try and get higher rankings from search engines.

Landing Page

Definition

Smaller, usually compact commercial type pages used in internet marketing that have the feel more of an ad than a website. Usually these are just one page in nature, maybe two with a contact form and ask for a subscription, or some sort of financial hook.

Link Popularity

Definition

A measurement of the number of links pointing to a web page or web site.

Link Text or Text Link or Anchor Link or Hyperlink

Definition

Typically a word, image or phrase that has been programmed to take the user to another website page either on the same site or not if clicked on. Links are used for everything from navigation to reference.

Link that is Reciprocal or Reciprocal Link

Definition

Typically an agreement in internet marketing between two websites to link back to each other.

Long Tail Theory or Long Tail Keywords

Definition

Keywords that have typically more than 2 or 3 words and that point to a local niche’ or specific product type or name. For example “California web design for restaurants” as a keyword phrase.

META Description Tag

Found in META tags, this tag defines the description of a page. Typically it should be a more detailed overview of the page’s content so search engines know where to place it in search results.

Found in META tags, this tag defines a keyword or keyword phrase that give a quick overview of the page’s content so search engines know where to place it in search results.

PR – Page Rank

A calculated rate for a website based on the number of a hyperlinks and activity, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance.

A file that contains specific instructions to tell search engines where or where not to look and index in your website directory.

Search Engine Spider or Crawler

Definition

Software that search engines use to comb through the directory of your website through links and other means to try and index or include your website and it’s contents.

SEO Black Hat

Definition

Techniques of achieving higher rankings that are unethical. Typically short-term solutions that search engines are aware of. If caught, your website can be banned from search.

SEO White Hat

Definition

Techniques of achieving higher rankings that are ethical. Long-term, natural and organic solutions. Rankings obtained this way typically are more stable and long-lasting.

SERP – Search Engine Results Page

Definition

This is a measurement of where a website is ranked based on a keyword or keyword phrase.

SERP Tracker

Definition

Online or offline software used to track SERP trends.

Social Bookmarking

Definition

When your website or a page in your website is bookmarked by a high PR site like Delicious.com. Lots of bookmarks act like backlinks in that they are an indicator of importance to search engines.

Definition

Is the methodization of social media activity with the intent of attracting unique visitors to website content.

Definition

A total of times a website has been clicked on within a certain amount of time. This number includes unique visits as well as return visits from the same user.
